Introduction

As the focus in the mining sector shifts towards compliance with the International Cyanide Management Code, it is imperative for a range of personnel to be fully informed and actively involved in meeting their companies’ obligations and requirements.
This course informs personnel of the safety and hazards of cyanide and explores various cyanide degradation methods so as to make it safe for people and the environment upon disposal. Fundamental aspects of the International Code for cyanide management are highlighted and links to all major Australian bodies who consult on the management of cyanide are provided. Case studies are examined to illustrate major hazard that may occur and be methods for mitigation that can be implemented, particularly in gold processing operations. The basic cyanide leaching of gold is covered to familiarise personnel not directly involved within the gold industry.
Various environmental issues pertaining to the use of cyanide are evaluated, including the effects on wildlife, monitoring procedures and strategies undertaken to prevent and control any risks to the environment. Treatment procedures and methods for dealing with cyanide poisoning are briefly covered as well as standard transport and storage procedures for the handling of cyanide.
Course Benefits
Personnel attending this course will become familiar with International Cyanide Management Code, thus enabling them to become actively involved in the implementation of reference procedures and standards for the management of cyanide. They will become more aware of the risks involved with the usage of cyanide and from that implement safer working procedures around the workplace from personal, management and training perspectives.
Case studies present highlight some of the major problems and hazards associated with cyanide usage, and also highlights the fragility of the environment and ecosystem. Participants are provided with comprehensive course notes on CD covering the basic theoretical and practical aspects of nickel processing. This will serve as a valuable resource for later reference.
The course assumes no prior knowledge and will treat the subjects in sufficient detail to provide a verygood understanding of cyanide management
