Introduction

training_mineralogy.jpg

With the depletion of high grade reserves, the mineral sector is facing the challenge to efficiently process complex and lower grade ores that are often refractory in nature. Process mineralogy has become the fundamental tool for solving the causes of unexpected poor recovery in ore processing. Combining advanced characterisation techniques and process engineering to unlock the properties of an ore, process mineralogy continues to provide insight for process optimisation. The mineralogy usually drives the process so a fundamental understanding is critical.

This course will provide a detailed knowledge on ore mineralogy which includes gold, uranium and base metals (copper, iron, nickel and lead-zinc). The application of mineralogy for assessing the complexity of mineral texture and their implication on liberation will also be discussed. Furthermore, the limitations in the traditional microscope approach as well as the progress made in the development of advanced instrumental techniques such as QEMSCAN, SIMS, MLA and PIXE will also presented. Case studies are also examined to illustrate the application of process mineralogy to solving problems in mineral processing and extractive metallurgy.

Course Benefits

Personnel attending this course will become familiar with the up-to-date approaches used in the process mineralogy. The case studies investigation will provide opportunities for the participants to gain first-hand information on how process mineralogy is currently being employed to uncover the problems in the processing of complex and lower grade ore; thus, enabling them to progressively make improvements in the recovery of metals to meet the current market demands, as well as to re-evaluate projects that were previously considered to be unprofitable.

Participants are provided with comprehensive course notes on CD covering the basic theoretical and practical aspects of applied process mineralogy in the mining industry. This will serve as a valuable resource for later reference. The course assumes no prior knowledge and will treat the subjects in sufficient detail to provide a very good understanding of process mineralogy.

Speakers
