Introduction

Rare Earth OxidesModern analysis of the earths crust by various groups has shown that far from being rare, rare earths as a group are one of the more common minerals in the earths crust, however they are spread out and finding concentrations of rare earths for mining purposes are less common than for other ores.

As the world moves forward into a world that has an ever increasing dependence on technology, Rare Earths (RE) are becoming a massively increasing area of interest for a growing number of mining companies and industry players. This interest is growing due to the applications that these minerals are used for and the unique properties and characteristics that they posses. These uses are varied, from use in batteries and magnets in hybrid cars, to uses in superconductor research, lasers and glass works.

Workshop Benefits

This half day workshop will enlighten the participants to a wide range of aspects regarding rare earths, from the basics of what they are and uses of these minerals through to the methods of mining, separating, converting, refining and purification. Additionally an insight into the future uses and the challenges faced by the industry with regards to these rare earths will be addressed.
